The Power of the Future Ferns - Trish Hastie
Trish Hastie is a believer in the power of futureFerns.
Trish has coached futureFerns for four years. The Hornby High School physical education teacher started on her coaching pathway at the same time her daughter took up netball. Although she had represented Canterbury in the National Championship as an athlete, she acknowledges that coaching is much different. Trish praises the amount and quality of resources and support available to futureFerns coaches.
“I really enjoy the coach training sessions,” she says. “They are helpful and detailed, so we know exactly what we’re doing and we know the progression for the girls, and the specific questions we need to ask them, to encourage them to improve.”
The sessions to support coaches are led by Sara Norton of Christchurch Netball Centre, who delivers the content from Netball New Zealand.
“Anyone can pick up futureFerns coaching and use the resources. They come with awesome little videos to help at your training sessions; these make it quick and easy to learn. I also really like the futureFerns starting with five aside,” Trish adds, “because there’s a lot more opportunity to get the ball, which develops your skills faster.”
For other parents who might consider coaching a team, Trish has words of encouragement. After all, she reflects, many parents feel silly for not knowing the rules. “You’re encouraging your kids to learn something new. Coaching is a great way to learn alongside them. It’s never too late!” Trish insists.
“Don’t be afraid to put your hand up to coach. You’ll always be supported by Sara, CNC and the team.”
Her continuing motivation comes from seeing the smiles and enjoyment of her team members. Through futureFerns, she says, they understand “why there’s a rule, and why they’re offside.” As the game starts to make more sense, she sees the players connect better as a team.
Trish praises the influence of NetballSmart on the younger players, instilling positive habits that help prevent injury. She is also a fan of CNC’s annual junior tournaments including the Jellybean event. “It’s really cool in one day, with five games, to see how much progress they make.”
Trish says she loves to hear her daughter ask, ‘What are we doing this week at training?’
As for the future of Trish’s coaching? She looks to her daughter for the answer: “I’ll coach her for as long as she lets me.”

Cadbury Volunteer of the month for May
Here is a little about our Mere that she sent her U15 team this season .....
My name is Mere Matenga with a background of sport coaching experience of nearly 20 years. Definitely before all of you were born I was already on my way to learn & grow as a coach with passion & the desire to make better changes for every player.
Description: What you expect from me as a coach - To be prepared & organised the training programmes where drills are set to focus on building skills in strength & conditioning, delivery of the ball & receiving techniques, styles of footwork, variety of attacking moves, defensive cues and quick setups, shooting with attacking moves in the goal circle. Building fitness levels through muscular strength, endurance & flexibility. This will improve agility, balance, coordination, power, quick decision making & speed. Lastly education on all playing positions and game strategies.
Team building is very important where we will learn from our trainings and games to encourage and develop a team bond where we all respect each other’s strengths, efforts & characteristics to make this team a better team as this becomes enjoyable and rewarding to see good connections needed to support each other.
My personal favourite is to build on confidence where this gift is received when you accept this & work from the start to grow self discipline through hard work, accepting your strengths & weaknesses & most of all - always protecting your confidence to endure the challenges that always face you with readiness.
Description: As the coach, it is expected that you come to trainings & your games with attention, where listening is important to practice discipline, enjoyment to put effort into your work of development and leave trainings and games feeling you have achieved in learning & growing your skills and knowledge in this sport of Netball.
I could only hope that you all as a team will enjoy what there is to offer & to be connected to your new team. It is exciting & the rewards do come at it’s due time.
