Woolworths futureFERNS (Years 3 to 8) have the option to play on various week days indoor at the Netball Sports Centre (NSC) located at Nga Puna Wai, OR Saturdays at Hagley Park.
Playing Procedure
Year 1-2 - This level introduces Netball to 5 to 6 year olds. The aim is to develop fundamental movement and ball skills.
The 20–minute game that follows the initial skill session is played on one third of a full–size court, by teams of
four, with the emphasis on equal participation. Modified equipment is used.
Play at NSC at 3:45pm on a Tuesday afternoon.
Years 3 and 4: Netball Smart warm up followed by 15 minutes skill session. Play 4 x 8 minutes quarters with 2 minute breaks between each quarter.
The focus for this age group is to develop further skills, while still playing on a reduced court size with modified equipment. The format promotes lots of scoring, lots of touches on the ball and fun for all participants. With five players in each team and rotating positions, this ensures everyone has an equal chance to develop.
Years 3 or 4 are not permitted to play in the Year 5/6 grade. A mixed grade for years 3 and 4 is available for smaller schools/clubs who cannot field a full team in the one grade.
Games played at either NSC on a Thursday night 4:15 & 5:15 OR Saturday at TBC
Year 5 and 6: Netball Smart warm up. Play 4 x 8 minute quarters with 2 minute breaks between each quarter.
Netball continues to be modified for players of this age. The focus is on learning and continued development of fundamental movement and basic Netball skills. The 6v6 game is fast and provides players with lots of touches on the ball to enhance skill development, engagement and enjoyment.
A maximum of two Year 6 players are also permitted in a mixed Year 5/6 team with prior approval from the Christchurch Netball Centre. Years 5 or 6 are not permitted to play in the Year 7 or 8 grades.
Games played at either NSC on a Friday night 4:15 & 5:15 OR Saturday at 11am
Year 7: Netball Smart warm up. Play 4 x 10 minute quarters with 2 minute breaks between each quarter.
Players have developed a considerable understanding of the game, and are now playing seven-a-side. The emphasis is on
converting fundamental movement skills to foundation Netball skills. Performance, challenge and ‘playing’ are key
motives for this age group. Ensuring positional rotation and playing at least half a game will give each player the
opportunity to participate and develop.
Games played at either NSC on a Wednesday night 4:30 & 5:30 OR Saturday at TBC
Year 8: Netball Smart warm up. Play 4 x 10 minute quarters with 2 minute breaks between each quarter.

Player Rotation Policy
